“I think it is really mean because before, living in Bermuda used to mean you were living in one of the best islands in the world, and now it means watching your back because you might die,” Seven-year-old Rebecca Cowen, of Victor Scott Primary, reflecting on Bermuda's spiralling gun crime in an English assignment.“My Government, from 1998 to today, has failed. I give my Government a triple F. It's like we bought a house built on sand, and instead of fixing it, we've changed the curtains and we've changed the tiles.” Government Senator Marc Bean called for a revolution of the education system, describing the existing one as “trash”. He acknowledged that the system was put in place before the PLP took power, but admonished the party for not doing enough to change it.He later apologised for the comments. Sen Bean then said his mistake was criticising the PLP publicly, but that he meant every word.“I believe that Bermuda will one day have a volunteer army and coastguard,” Premier Ewart Brown said he believed conscription to the Bermuda Regiment would end.Speaking on Government's treatment of the Bermuda Cement Company in the House of Assembly, Works and Engineering Minister Derrick Burgess told Opposition MP Trevor Moniz: “Come on Trevor, you are the Portuguese Consul and can't speak a word of Portuguese — cut your nonsense out boy. You never thought that you would have to come to slaves' children for an answer or a decision. That is the bigger problem — he doesn't like that Mr Speaker and he better get used to it.”
