Bidding is crucial in teams competitions

Happy New Year again! I hope the year has started well for you and that 2011 brings you great thing at and away from the Bridge table. Most players will get slowly back into their stride and get ready for the big event of the year, the Regional, which starts on January 22. It is always an exciting time as the tension builds up over the next three weeks. There are three major Teams events at the Regional, two Swiss Teams events and the week-long Knockout Teams. Teams is probably more “relaxing” than Pairs as there are actually times when one can switch off a bit as overtricks are not as crucial as they are at Pairs, and when a contract is clearly cold or has already gone down, the rest of the play allows for a breather. That, however, rarely applies in the bidding or in the early stages of defence, and this week's hand from the England-India match at the Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship is an example.Board 3. East now also passed(!), South bid a preemptive 5♦ and West, who passed originally, now made a takeout double at the 5 level!East was delighted to bid 6¨ which was passed around to North who broke every rule in the bidding book by bidding 6♦ after having opened a pre-empt! There was, in my opinion, hardly one good bid at this table other than South's initial pass! 6♦ doubled went for 300 6¨ makes if declarer runs the jack of clubs on the first round, which is likely on the bidding, so the save looked pretty good .In the other room, the Indian West opened 1ª after South's pass and after some diamond interference, East West got to 6ª which looks stone cold. Except that ... North made the expert lead of the two of diamonds. South won, and as the saying goes “even the waiter knew that North wanted a club ruff” which duly arrived. One down and Plus 100 to go with the Plus 300 meant 9 imps to England. An interesting teams hand!
