Simmons installed as Grand Master of Oddfellows

When Bro Laurel Henry Simmons, a self-employed plumbing contractor was installed Provincial Grand Master of the Hamilton District of the Independent Order of Manchester Unity, it was second time around for the veteran Odd fellow. He served the office with distinction three years ago.The installation, according to ancient custom, was in the Loyal Flower of the Day Lodge on the corner of Victoria Street and Union Square in Hamilton. Installed as Deputy Prov. Grand Master was Sis Sylvia Lightbourne; as Prov. Corresponding Secretary, Sis Marion Tannock; Prov. Treasurer, Sis Violet Brangman; Bro Ted Darrell as Right Support to the Pro Grand Master and his Left Support, Sis Sheila Conyers.Guest speaker at the banquet that took place two days later was Cabinet Minister Michael Weeks. His forebears were and are prominent in the Samaritans Lodge, owners of the lodge building on Cobbs Hill, Warwick.Mr. Weeks stressed the important role the Oddfellows with their notable heritage of charity, could play in coping with the alienation plaguing the Bermuda of today. He called attention to what he called the society of broken men in the country, being attracted to gang affiliation.“Reach out in the byways and encourage these young people, especially the young men, ‘broken men’ many of whom grew up without fathers, mentors and role positive role models, We live in a society where physical, emotional and spiritual fatherlessness is becoming the norm,’ observed the politician.Mr Weeks was high in his praise of the Oddfellows’ heritage and their practice of charity as expressed in Biblical terms, more of which he felt was needed today.
