Young Bermudian to represent Delaware at United States Youth Programme conference

A 17-year-old Bermudian Thurston Brevett is one of two students selected to represent the State of Delaware at the 51st annual United States Youth Program now underway in Washington, DC.The State’s Secretary of Education cited Thurston and John Micklos for their outstanding leadership and commitment to volunteer work and for being academically ranked in the top one-percent of the state among high school juniors and seniors.The two will be among 104 student delegates having their transportation and all expenses paid by the Hearst Foundations.They were nominated by and selected as delegates by their teachers and principals.In addition each will be given a $5,000 scholarship with encouragement to continue coursework in government, history and public affairs.In Washington the delegates will stay at the historic Mayflower Hotel.They will meet with President Obama, attend meetings and briefings with Senators, a Justice of the Supreme Court and members of the national media.Thurston (pictured here) attends the Cab Calloway School of the Arts.He is the son of Dr Carol Simmons Brevett and Dr Renford Brevett.His grandfather is Rev Dr Erskine Simmons and Michelle Simmons principal of the Berkeley Institute.At the Cab Calloway Fine Arts School, Thurston serves as Student Government historian.He is an instrumental music major who plays saxophone, electric and double bass and piano.He also is a member of the National Honor Society, a National Achievement semi-finalist and member of he winning team of Delaware State Finance Challenge.He is the tenor saxophone captain of his school’s marching band.Last year he won the Cliff Notes Composition Competition, which he performed live at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival with his band, The Thirsties.
