We were among the many friends, and one-time colleagues, of the Hon William Alexander Scott, exulting over the high praises, and many tributes, for his forty-plus years of leadership in the Progressive Labour Party. The gala in his honour was in the amphitheatre of The Fairmont Southampton. ‘The Honorable’ who was more often referred to than not as, ‘Sir Alex’, and was the sixth official leader of the PLP, and the second PLP Premier of Bermuda was charismatically cool, taking everything in his distinguished, calculating stride.Insights into how Alex Scott impacted behind the scenes on the political face of Bermuda were revealed by members of his potent kitchen cabinet, that comprised Jennifer Smith, later the first PLP Premier, and now Dame Jennifer, also Hilton G. (Buddy) Hill, and the late David Allen.Theirs were glimpses about strategising at Scott Craft, his revolutionary public relations and advertising firm. And most revealing were ‘tales’ about his bachelorhood, and so-called ‘double-dating’ with Olga, who became his wife, and fellow bachelor friend Allan Cooper, and Vivilyn, who married each other. There was an audio-visual presentation of the high points of the Scott premiership. And finally, a toast to the legacy of the Jackson and Scott clan of cousins, who have found themselves political poles apart, but tracking on the Bermuda political scene from the first quarter century after the 1834 Emancipation of Slavery up to the present day.In recent times there were the President of the Senate Albert Jackson, and Senators, Louise Jackson, and Alex Scott, who later in the House of Assembly, were on opposite political sides.Presently there is the retired Premier’s son, Warwick Assemblyman Lawrence Scott, and OBA cousin, Pembroke Assemblywoman, Susan Jackson. The ruling OBA’s Minister of Community Development the Hon. Wayne Scott, and retired banker cousin, Wayne Jackson, proposed the toasts to their cousin Alex.Other tributes were from hotelier Mike Winfield, who was the United Bermuda Party’s Senate Leader, when Alex was the Opposition PLP Leader.Other members of that Scott team were Senators Rev. Trevor Woolridge, and this writer, Ira Philip. Rev. Woolridge is now pastor of historic Ward Chapel AME Church in Prattville, Alabama. His salutation was read at the gala by Ms. Tina Caines. She also dramatically presented the tribute from Dame Jennifer Smith, who also was unable to be present. Likewise were tributes to Alex from cousins Stuart Hayward, and his sister Sylvia Hayward Harris.Broadcaster Bryan Darby enlivened the gala with his tribute to his friend Alex, during their neophyte friendships as neighbours, at Salt Kettle in Paget.
