Time: Just before 3.50am.

Location: Outside a home at the junction of North Shore Road and Overview Hill, Pembroke.

What happened: Mr Smith had gone to a friend’s house after a night out in Hamilton. He was walking from his car, which was parked on Overview Hill, to the friend’s property when the gunman approached him on foot from behind, from the direction of Mount Hill, and shot him twice.

The shooter is believed to have made his escape on a motorcycle, travelling back up Overview Hill, towards Mount Hill. One of Mr Smith’s friends and the friend’s mother, a nurse, performed CPR before police and an ambulance arrived. Mr Smith was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Alleged motive: Police have been unable to determine why Mr Smith was shot or even whether he was the intended target of the gunman.

So far their inquiries have yielded nothing to suggest the victim had any enemies, was involved in any crime or had been involved in any altercation while out socialising in the hours before he was killed on April 30/May 1. The motive for his murder remains a mystery.

Retaliatory attacks: None reported.

Arrests: There have been no arrests in this case.

Witness appeal: Investigators want to hear from anyone who saw or spoke to Mr Smith while he was out socialising in Hamilton on the evening of April 30/May 1, particularly in Moon nightclub, the last venue he visited, or Café Cairo, or on Front Street itself.

They also want to talk to anyone who saw a person matching the description of the suspect or a motorcycle in the immediate area of Overview Hill, Vaucrosson Crescent and Mount Hill between the hours of 3am and 4am on May 1. Local residents who spotted any suspicious activity in the neighbourhood during that time frame are asked to contact police.
