I still get excited by Cup Match

Jim Woolridge

CV Jim Woolridge is better known nowadays as ‘The Voice of Summer’ the sound of his deep voice on the airwaves heralding the start of the cricket season. He’s been commentating on cricket for decades and his first Cup Match as a commentator was in 1965.“I still get excited by it now,” he said. “The euphoria and excitement. The purpose of the holiday was almost lost in the sport.”Mr Woolridge was reluctant to single out any one Cup Match player, although he did talk about St George’s slow left arm swing bowler Clarence Parfitt, who had figures including 9-47, 8-23, 8-38 and 7-18.“Players then were more dedicated and it was more difficult to get into the team. One of the things missing among younger players today is discipline,” he said.
