Injured Quaashie chosen to carry Bermuda flag

A few weeks ago Quaashie Douglas’ hopes of making a big impact on this year’s Carifta Games were dashed when she suffered an injury. The Whitney Institute student had already achieved the Carifta qualifying standard for the Under-17 1500 metres but was then ruled out after pulling her hamstring competing over the same distance during the Telford Mile. However, Douglas has been given a second chance to leave her mark on the upcoming regional track meet after being asked to carry the Island’s flag during this Friday’s official opening ceremony at the National Sports Centre (NSC).The Island’s flag bearer says it will be a great honour to lead Bermuda’s Carifta team out onto the big stage in front of the home crowd.“I am very proud to have been given this opportunity and I feel like I am still a part of the Carifta team representing my country,” Douglas said. “I was actually surprised when I was asked to be the flag bearer.”Douglas’ injury first flared up while competing in the 200 metres and 4x100 relay during the Inter-School Sports.“It pulled up a little bit but it didn’t feel too bad,” she said. “But on the day of the Telford Mile when I did the 1500 metre it really started to hurt and I pulled the hamstring.“I was very upset at first but my coach (Jarita Vickers) said there were other events that I can represent Bermuda in after Carifta.”Despite her ordeal, Douglas has remained upbeat and has even become a source of inspiration for her peers who are taking part in the Games. The 13-year-old athlete says she has absolutely no doubts that Bermuda’s representatives will put their best foot forward.“I think we have a very good and strong team,” Douglas said. “I think they will do very good and come out strong.”Bermuda will be represented by a team of 55 athletes, competing in various track and field disciplines in the Under-17 and Under-20 girls and boys categories.
