Kyrah Scraders bagged Bermuda’s first medal of the Carifta Games as she took the silver medal in the Girls Under-17 1500 metres in front of a partisan home crowd.Scraders, who was aiming to go one better than her bronze medal last year in Jamaica, finished a close second behind Chantai Smith from Jamaica.Smith won the race in a time of four minutes and 51.36 seconds while Scraders crossed the line in 4:55.46.Scraders, this year’s Front Street Mile Middle School champion, admitted she was slightly disappointed that she wasn’t able to snatch the gold.“I’m pleased with my race, the wind was a bit of a factor but in the end I’m pleased,” said the talented teenager.“I medalled for the second time but wanted to win this time around because I came third last year.”Slowly picking off her competitors throughout the middle stage of the race, Scraders pushed Smith all the way until the final straight when the Jamaican pulled away.Andrea Foster of Guyana claimed bronze in 4:57.28 while Bermuda’s Zakiyyah Showers placed sixth (5:09.28).“I think I did well given it is in front of my home crowd and there was a bit of nerves but overall I’m happy,” she said.“Coming second is pleasing in front of my home crowd.
