Butterfield looks to build on Athens experience

Tyler Butterfield says he will use the experience gained from his last and only Olympic Games appearance in Athens eight years ago to push him to new heights when he competes in London this summer.Butterfield cemented his spot in this year’s Games with a 25th place at the ITU World Championship Madrid race on Sunday, knowing before the event he needed only a respectable finish to confirm qualification. With the world’s top 55 pro triathletes making the trip to England in August to do battle again, Butterfield placed 45th among those who were hoping to earn a spot in the Games. At the Greece Games in 2004, as a relatively inexperienced triathlete, the Bermudian placed 35th and while the competition has stiffened in the last eight years, Butterfield is hoping he can improve his position.“It’s pretty overwhelming and pretty wonderful (to qualify again),” said Bermudian.“I’m honoured to represent Bermuda and I hope to use my experience from Athens, paired with a solid season of training and racing, to put forth my finest performance to date.”A seventh-place finish at the ITU Triathlon World Cup Ishigaki and a fourth at this month’s the ITU World Cup Huatalco event in Mexico showed the Butterfield can mix it up with some of the world’s best on any given day.“I went into Madrid somewhat fatigued, having ramped up my training in the prior weeks knowing that I would likely make the Olympic team,” he said.“While I always want to bring my best to each start line, I also have to keep my eye on the big picture goal, and the timing now is critical in terms of the work I need to put in for London.“I continued training heading into the final qualification race but made sure that my race day effort was enough to solidify my Olympic spot. I’m thrilled that I was able to make the team, and hopefully my strategic plan and training programme will pay off at the Games.”Butterfield will join Flora Duffy, who represented Bermuda in Beijing four years ago and has also enjoyed an outstanding season which saw her claim a first ITU World Cup victory in Huatalco.“While I was fairly confident I would get the job done, you never know until you reach the finish line and the final rankings are confirmed,” added Butterfield. “And although I had anticipated that moment, nothing quite prepares you for the emotion of being told, officially, that you’re an Olympian.”Butterfield has returned to his US home in Boulder, Colorado to focus on the final nine weeks of preparation. His programme includes racing the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon on June 24 and potentially the Dextro Energy Triathlon Hamburg (an ITU World Triathlon Series race) on July 21.
