Bermuda clash with Greenland for bronze

Bermuda will take on Greenland for the bronze medal in the Island Games women’s volleyball competition after both teams suffered semi-final losses on Thursday.Bermuda, second-place finishers in Group A with a 3-1 round-robin record, fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-17) to Group B winners Faroe Islands, who remained unbeaten in the tournament with a 4-0 record.Greenland, Group B runners-up, were beaten 3-0 (25-15, 25-7, 25-19) by Group A winners Saaremaa, who ran their tournament record to 5-0.The bronze medal match goes Friday at 9 a.m., at Berkeley Institute, while the gold medal match will take place at 1.30 p.m., also at Berkeley.Saaremaa, an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea, and the Faroe Islands a self-governing region of Denmark located in the heart of the Gulf Stream between Norway and Iceland - have played in the last six Island Games gold medal matches.Faroe won in 2009, 2005, 2003 and 2001, while Saaremaa captured gold in 2011 and 2007.Faroe coach Bartal Eliasen said a decision taken two decades ago to organise a national youth team volleyball programme is paying dividends. “Ten players on this team are under 23,” he said. “We are building teams up from a young age, and developing their all-round ability. Kids play volleyball in the schools and clubs from the age of four.”Bermuda coach Juanita Blee is an admirer of the Faroe squad. “They are young, they have fresh legs and they play from such a young age that their instincts for the game are automatic it’s like breathing for them,” she said. “I have encouraged our younger players like Khianda Pearman-Watson and Melissa Fiddick to watch how they approach the game, how they block, their quick arms and feet, and learn from it.”Blee said she was proud of her team’s spirited effort against talented opponents. “The players put their heart and soul into that game,” she said. “They worked as a team and didn’t give up. They fought for every point.”The Bermuda players watched Greenland’s semi-final loss to Saaremaa yesterday morning. “They are a scrappy team, we know what’s coming at us,” she said. “If we play like we did today, we could have a medal.”Bermuda’s best-ever Island Games women’s volleyball finish is fourth, having lost the bronze medal match to Menorca in both 2009 and 2007.On the men’s side, medals are up for grabs on Friday as Bermuda takes on Greenland at 9 a.m., Aland face Gotland at 11.15 a.m., and the Faroe Islands meet Saaremaa at 3.45 p.m. in the final round robin matches.Men’s volleyball medals will be determined solely on the basis of round-robin play.Bermuda sit at 3-2, as do the Faroe Islands, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) victors over Gotland.A Bermuda victory in Friday morning would mean that the Faroes would have to upset the defending Island Games gold medallists, Saaremaa, in the afternoon to draw level.Any ties in the standings will be decided on set differential. If that does not break the deadlock, point differential will decide the medal. If that is even, the result between the two teams will be decisive. Bermuda beat the Faroes 3-2 on Monday.Heading into today’s play, Bermuda have a set differential of plus-three, while Faroe has a plus-five differential.Should Bermuda and Faroe both lose on Friday, then those two teams and Greenland would all finish with 3-3 records.Bermuda’s best finish in the Island Games men’s volleyball competition came in 2005 when they claimed silver in the Shetland Islands, losing to Saaremaa in the final.
