Son of the soil Jarryd Dillas captured the silver medal and Bermuda the team gold after the NatWest Island Games golf tournament concluded at Port Royal on Thursday. But top amateur Dillas might have been slightly disappointed he didn’t go one better.Ultimately he lost by the narrowest of margins, a single shot adrift of gold medallist Gavin O’Neill of Jersey, who came from behind to top the leaderboard. In blustery conditions, Dillas returned a five-over-par 76 while O’Neill posted the best round of the day, an even 71, which allowed him to leapfrog over Dillas and third round leader Johan Lindholm (Aland) who ballooned to a last-round ten-over-par 81.O’Neill carded a four-round total of 297, Dillas 298 and Lindholm (301) who had to settle for bronze.Dillas admitted coming up short of a second gold medal at the Games was a bitter pill to swallow.“I’m obviously disappointed with myself as I felt that I was in a good position after two days,” he said. “But obviously with the poor finish yesterday (Wednesday) and poor start to my round today I got a little too far behind and in essence threw the golf tournament away.”Bermuda’s Mark Phillips (305) was seventh after an impressive final round one-over-par 72.Contributing to the hosts’ cause were Jevon Roberts (16th) and George Campbell (tied for 17th). Roberts posted a four-day total of 315 while Campbell finished a further three shots back at 318.That was just enough for Bermuda to grab the gold ahead of Isle Wight who finished with a total of 906. Bermuda returned a total of 905. Jersey took the bronze on 912.“I’m happy for the team and glad we were able to pull out a team gold,” Dillas said. “We had three guys on the team making their international debuts for Bermuda, so I’m very proud of the guys and very happy to pull out the gold medal.”Meanwhile, Ebonie Burgess led the local ladies’ contingent as she finished sixth after a last round of 83 for a total of 333.Elizabeth Parsons placed eighth (339), Katrin Burnie 16th (353) and Ann Symonds 22nd (366).In today’s final round, Burgess shot 83, Parsons 84, Burnie 83 and Symonds 84.The Individual women’s gold medal went to Gotland’s Lina Billing (313) who won by five shots ahead of Guersey’s Aime Ponte (318).Cayman Islands’ Samantha Wilmer (320) won the bronze.Guernsey (997) won the women’s team event, silver went to Isle of Wight (1000) and bronze to Gotland (1009).Bermuda placed fifth overall in the women’s team event, with a four-day total of 1023.
