Chewstick wants you for its tour to Toronto
The Chewstick Foundation is looking for Bermuda's most promising entertainers to join them on the CHEWronto tour. The group is looking for musicians, poets, singers and performers to showcase Bermuda talent to audiences in Toronto, Canada. Six spots are available for interested artists able to travel April 20 through 24.“The CHEWronto tour is imperative to give Bermudian artists much needed exposure,” said Chewstick co-founder Najib Chentouf.Bermuda reggae singer Collie Buddz got his big break in Toronto. “Generally, Bermudian artists feel limited with what they can do with their creative talents because they are isolated from the kinds of large, diverse audiences that big cities afford,” said Deidra-Lee Bean, Chewstick's administrative and media relations officer.“With the CHEWronto tour, Chewstick is giving an opportunity to local artists that they typically otherwise wouldn't have.“They get to work with a band and a crew of other professional, committed artists to create a showcase of the best of Bermuda's talent and culture for an international audience.”The group will perform at three different venues in the city.“Lots of Bermudian university students will still be at school in Toronto and surrounding cities and we are hoping to get them to come out to our shows with their Canadian friends,” explained Carlita Lodge, Chewstick's event coordinator. The group visited New York City on its inaugural tour last year. Auditions for the tour will take place Sunday at The Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe on the corner of Elliott and Court Streets.Interested artists should send an e-mail to info[AT]chewstick.org or telephone 292-2439 (CHEW) for more information.Artists are asked to prepare two performance pieces to present on the day, although they may only have the opportunity to perform one. Each piece should be no longer than five minutes.
