First kite festival planned for June 20

When Good Friday is over this year, don’t put your kites too far in the back of the closet one group is planning Bermuda’s first kite festival.Colour the Sky: Bermuda’s First Annual Kite Festival will be held on National Heroes Day in June.“Fort St Catherine is the ideal venue with its beautiful beach against the backdrop of the historic fort and the cobalt blue Atlantic Ocean,” said organiser Tricia Walters.“The beach and surrounding areas, with ample parking, will be bursting with activities specifically geared to kite enthusiasts, the young and young at heart.“The day will be packed with live experiences that will appeal to all senses: food, education through kite-making workshops, fashions, performing arts and beautiful kites. Through this celebration, we will focus attention on the origin of kites in Bermuda and its importance to our heritage and culture. It will also be a salute to our national heroes.”She said the organisers of the event hope to increase awareness of the great importance of families playing together and the unity and strength that this will foster, especially in children.“Children learn from play,” said Ms Walters. “Their natural curiosity leads them to learn. It is what childhood is all about. Adults can add a great deal to their children’s development by allowing reasonable freedom to explore, providing interesting playthings and playing with their children frequently and the kite festival provides this opportunity.”The festival is planned for Fort St Catherine, St George’s on June 20, starting at 11 am.
