Modern approaches to fibre art

Ami Zander’s piece ‘Across the Universe’ will be on display during the ‘Bermudian Fibre’ show at Common Ground Cafe.

A new exhibition opening at the Common Ground Cafe will explore a range of modern approaches to fibre art in Bermuda.‘Bermudian Fibre’ is part of the Art in the Dark exhibition series. The exhibiting artists include both emerging and established fibre artists such as Kathy Harriott, Milton Hill, Lynn Morrell, Shelley Pearson, Susan Pearson and Ami Zanders. The majority of the work in this exhibit offers a contemporary twist to classically identifiable and iconic Bermudian images.“Lynn Morrell’s, all new textile collection reaches into more abstracted forms of Bermudian themes mastering cutting edge techniques,” said Select Palette Art’s curator Susan Pearson.“Kathy Harriott has utilised her contemporary hand printed monotype papier in a cut collection of classically Bermudian shutters. Ami Zander’s innovative use of collage with woven textiles and mixed media has enabled her to transport us to her vision of special events. While Milton Hill has transformed Bermudian cedar into a sculpture of hibiscus-sabdariffa.”Ms Pearson said her daughter, Shelley Pearson, would also be exhibiting with papier scherenschnitte.“My collection of papier scherenschnitte expresses modern stylised flora combining velum, art and rice papier,” said Ms Pearson. “It is an old Germanic art form. It is something my mother, Ingeborg Beidleman, passed down to us. My mother lives in Pennsylvania. Her parents were from Germany.”The show runs through July 6 in the Chancery Lane, Hamilton gallery.
