Garden Club gears up for 90th birthday
Take 20 floral designers and some 50 pieces of art, put them together, and what do you have? A 90th birthday celebration of the Garden Club of Bermuda, that’s what!Joining forces with the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, the Club will host a floral arts exhibition entitled ‘Art in Bloom’ at the gallery in the Botanical Gardens for four days from Saturday, November 12.Taking inspiration from the finalists of this year’s Charman Prize, Garden Club members, some of whom are award-winning international competitors, will interpret many of them in floral designs.“It is going to be very exciting a feast for the senses, and a delight for the eyes,” project coordinator Ros Gutteridge promises. “We really want people to come out and see the show.”To ensure that they do, Mrs Gutteridge is keeping most of the details close to her chest, but reveals that, in addition to flowers, the individually-designed arrangements will feature a predominance of local plant material.Designers will be on hand on opening day to discuss the floral displays and answer any questions the public may have regarding their construction and mechanics, as well as the relationship between art and the floral interpretations.“The interpretations will be subjective,” Mrs Gutteridge admits. “People may not always agree with our selections, but the purpose is to complement and enhance the art, of which there are some beautiful pieces.”For those who have not yet viewed the Charman Prize exhibits, ‘Art in Bloom’ will provide an added incentive to do so.‘Art in Bloom’ is the culmination of a long-held desire by Mrs Gutteridge to have what she calls a “cross-pollination” between various charities something she feels “very strongly” about.“I think it is very interesting to do things together,” she said. “Masterworks is a fantastic organisation in a beautiful setting. Come and walk in the Botanical Gardens after seeing the exhibition. I find it extraordinary that people don’t stop in their lives to enjoy something like that. People need to enjoy life more.”Referring to ‘Art in Bloom’ she added, “There are many lovely things to do in Bermuda, and this will be one of them. The $5 entrance fee is an affordable joy.”Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art founder Tom Butterfield also expressed pleasure with the new partnership.“Masterworks is delighted to be partnering with the Garden Club of Bermuda, and looks forward to seeing [the designers’] creative floral interpretations of some of the Charman artwork currently on display. A show like this is so appropriate, with our setting in the beautiful Botanical Gardens, and we hope it brings a new segment of the population through our doors.”For more information visit www. gardenclubbermuda.org.‘Art in Bloom’ will be open on November 12, 14, 15 and 16 from 10am to 4pm in the main gallery of the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.
