No need to wait till ‘Friday’ to see this comedy legend

John Witherspoon in one of the 'Friday' comedy movies. He is putting on a show at the Fairmont Southampton on Tuesday.

Rumour has it that ‘tis the season to be jolly.Considering the unbridled glee that arrives like clockwork on the last days of each calendar year, isn’t it a perfect time for a comedy show?Well there’s quite a doozy of a show coming to the Fairmont Southampton on Tuesday, December 27.International comedy legend John Witherspoon will perform live in Bermuda on the day after Boxing Day. Yes, the dude who taught us that we must “coordinate” in the film ‘Boomerang’, kept Craig in line in all three ‘Friday’ films, provided a laugh a minute as Pops on ‘The Wayans Brothers’, and brought life to the iconic Robert Freeman, aka Granddad, on the brilliant animated series ‘The Boondocks’, is coming to Bermuda! You know his work. He has made you laugh. Why would any red-blooded comedy lover want to miss this event? John Witherspoon is a decorated veteran of black comedy, having created a portfolio that is replete with African American comedy classics. I daresay that John Witherspoon has done at least as much for black comedy as, say, Morgan Freeman has done for black dramatic acting. Yeah, he’s that essential. Think about it. Can you name a modern black comedy classic that Witherspoon was not in? ‘Hollywood Shuffle’ (1987), ‘I’m Gonna Git You Sucka’ (1988), ‘House Party’ (1990), ‘Boomerang’ (1992), ‘Friday’ (1995, 1998, and 2002), ‘Soul Plane’ (2004), and the list goes on and on!It’s not often we get to see a celebrated legend at work but next week we’ll get one such opportunity.John Witherspoon has recently completed a stand-up tour, and will now deliver his hilarious brand of everyman humour to Bermuda; a master craftsman honing his craft. Unmissable!Rounding out this marvellous night of mirth and merriment will be up-and-coming comedian Lanre O out of Boston, and local funnyman Eddie G. Sia Spence will bring song to the evening and Jugglin’ Jason will provide the musical milieu. This show is the latest blockbuster offered by Envy Production, the guys who brought you Bruce Bruce, Mike Epps, DeRay Davis, and Aries Spears in 2011. All of those shows were off the chain, so you will want to get your ticket for John Witherspoon very, very soon!Tickets for this show are $75 and are available at Zig Zags, Choices, and Sound Stage in the Washington Mall.
