Beating the drum for Bermuda

Some of Bermuda’s young musicians will get the chance to perform with some of the top marching bands in the United States tomorrow — in their own backyard. The Howard University Showtime Band and the Gwynn Park Band Yellow Jackets will march across the National Sports Centre with students from the PHC National Drumcore, the Sandys Showtime Drumline, the Whitney Drumline and the National Drumline as part of Drumline 2012 Respect the Rhythm.“I would say several hundred local kids will be taking part,” said David Durham of organisers Yhoshi Productions. “They are so excited about this. In the past permanent friendships have been made between our students and the musicians from abroad. We have one young girl that comes down every year to see the friend she made in Bermuda.”Previous year’s drumlines were attended by thousands of marching band fans from Bermuda and abroad. The Howard University Showtime Marching Band is known across the United States for its dazzling performances. The band has 130 members, and was known as The Soul Steppers, until a name change in 1988. One of their highlights was performing at President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009.Mr Durham said the Gwynn Park Yellow Jackets from Brandywine, Maryland, would be particularly inspiring. Many of the students are from an economically challenged background and it is the first aeroplane flight for many of the band members the United States Government helped most of them get passports for the first time. Many needed sponsorship to make the trip.“It is a very popular event,” said Mr Durham. “How often do you get to hear bands of this calibre playing in Bermuda? This is really an event that is good for tourism. These band members are bringing their families with them. We have booked many hotel rooms for them. Of course, they will also be eating in local restaurants.”One of the nice things about the event was that the entire family could attend and enjoy the music, he added.Gates open at 1pm and the show is from 3pm to 6pm. General admission is between $35 and $75, and VIP tickets are $125. Tickets are available at 27th Century, the City Hall box office, Liberty Theatre, Scoops Ice Cream Parlour, Nail Bar and online, www.ptix.bm.
