A night at the opera for $35

Catching a performance at the world famous Metropolitan Opera house could set you back as much as $420, but for a fraction of the price you can get the same quality experience right here in Bermuda. The Gilbert & Sullivan Society is presenting a number of high-definition opera screenings, starting with L’Elisir d’Amore (‘Love Elixer’) next Saturday.L’Elisir d’Amore is a comedy about a poor peasant boy in love with a beautiful landowner, who torments him with her indifference. The peasant Nemorino gives all his money to buy a magic love potion from the eccentric neighbourhood doctor, but it turns out the potion is nothing more than cheap wine. With a new found confidence from the wine, Nemorino catches the beautiful Adina’s eye, but when the ‘potion’ no longer seems to be working he must enlist into the army to pay for another dose. One of the great operas by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti, the story is filled with a series of twists and turns before the audience learns whether the two wind up together. The opera will be sung in Italian, with English subtitles, said Gilbert & Sullivan Society board member Matthew Nester.Mr Nester, who was instrumental in bringing the recordings to Bermuda, trained as an opera singer in university, but now works in banking on the Island. He said: “Bermuda doesn’t have a lot of operas visiting the Island outside of a couple touring companies that have come for the Bermuda Festival in the past and recordings we have bought from the Metropolitan Opera house, so this is one of the few opportunities for people to see opera locally.“It’s particularly good that the performances were shown in full sound and high definition video at the BUEI theatre so this can be experienced rather cheaply. The $35 a piece allows people in Bermuda to see one of the preeminent opera houses of the world put on their production.“[L’Eliser d’Amore] is really one of the great comic operas by Donizetti and is one of his more widely known operas.”He said the society’s overall mission was to foster arts in the community. Though it mainly puts on musical productions and plays, Mr Nester said expanding their remit to include opera was a way to bring new opportunities for locals to experience.“If we inspire some young Bermudians to get interested in opera and pursue an opera career then so much the better,” he added. The series continues with Verdi‘s ‘Otello’ on November 10; Adès’ The Tempest on November 24; Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Tito) on January 12; Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) on January 26; Verdi’s Aida on February 9; Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda (Mary Stuart) on March 9; Verdi’s Rigoletto on March 23; Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini on April 20; Handel’s Giulio Cesare (Julius Caesar) on May 4.All performances show on Saturdays at 5pm in the BUEI Auditorium.Tickets, $35 for adults and $30 for students, can be purchased online www.gands.bm or www.premierticketsglobal.com or at the door.Complimentary hors d’oeuvres are included in the ticket price; a cash bar for pre-performance and interval drinks will also be on offer.
