Comedy for the soul

Some of the best local and international comedians will be taking the stage next weekend for what organisers claim could be one of the funniest line-ups of entertainment the Island has even seen.

The ‘Laugh Out Loud’ comedy event, organised by Hard Knock Promotions and KB Customs, will be kicking off at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Saturday, November 2.

Promoters Kevin Busby and Javon Burchall said they were aiming to give a mature audience a night they won’t soon forget.

“We are just trying to bring some grown folk entertainment to Bermuda,” Mr Busby explained. “We have an issue with us over 30s trying to find something to do and we figured everyone likes to laugh. Even when there’s a death in your family or something else goes wrong, laughter takes away from the pain for a few hours.

“We are just trying to do things a little different from the norm. They have had comedy shows here before, but we are trying to create an environment for people to feel special, for instance with a VIP section and things like that.”

Another thing the organisers say will set this event apart from others is the quality of local and international comedians.

Scheduled to take the stage are overseas talents like Dino Vigo, whose first televised stage appearance was on BET’s ‘One Mic Stand’, female comedian Dawn B, and award winning Canadian funny man, Nathan Macintosh.

The headliner for this year’s event is Brooklyn born comedian, A G White, who has brought his widely acclaimed act to the television screen with P Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy series on HBO, The Uptown Comedy Club on FOX and the prestigious ‘It’s Showtime at the Apollo’.

Mr White has tickled the world’s funny bone with his various ethnic characters, including ‘round the way’ girls, homeboys, Latinos, Jamaicans and Arabs. These funny impersonations have allowed his act to cross multicultural barriers.

Mr Busby said this unique brand of comedy was just what the Island needed right now and he hopes to see a wide cross section of the community represented at the event.

“You know how you have music for the soul? Well, he is that comedian where you can laugh out your chest and laugh out your pain and sorrow. He’s just that good,” the organiser added.

Local talents will include comedians Nadanja, Bootsie and Eddie G. Yet unlike other shows where the local comedians serve as a prelude to the main international acts, Mr Burchall said they were hoping to give Bermudians some real time in the spotlight.

“Some of our locals are just as funny as the American acts so we want to give them their props and will mix up the international and the local comedians throughout the night,” he said.

Other highlights of the event include a VIP section where people can rest assured they will not be heckled by people on stage; and a raffle with a host of exciting prizes. The event was made possible thanks to main sponsors: BGA and Bermuda Blue Printing.

Mr Busby said their main priorities were to make everyone feel safe and have an enjoyable night out.

“We want to give them something unforgettable so when they come to our shows they can expect a high quality event. We are trying to do a range of shows maybe three times a year, so it doesn’t get played out.

“Every show we put on is going to keep getting better and better,” he explained.

Money from the show will go to the ‘Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Bermuda’ charity, which provides local young people with mentoring and other programmes to set them on a path to success.

Tickets, $45 for general admission, $55 at the door and $85 for VIP guests, can be purchased at Secrets in the Washington Mall and Choice’s at the Walker Arcade in Hamilton. VIP ticket holders will also get complimentary wine and snacks; and free entry to the after-party being held at Margarita Grill, valued at $20.
