Santa Claus won’t be the only one racking up frequent flyer miles over the holidays.Bermuda Basketball Association’s (BBA) Under -19 team will also take to the friendly skies when they depart on Christmas Day for the Las Vegas High School Christmas Classic to be held December 26-29.The local representatives will be among the 32 teams competing in Vegas.BBA’s Under-19s have been pitted in Group A and will play their opening match against tournament hosts Las Vegas High School. The top two teams from each group will advance to the final. This year marks the BBA’s Under -19s fourth appearance at the tournament where their current best record stands at 2-1-3.The local team has undergone a subtle facelift from the one that competed last year with the additions of scoring guard and joint captain Kieron Dill and small forward Dion Easton.“Kieron is very strong so he can really play at the next level while Dion has come in and developed very well so we’re looking forward to the things he brings,” said BBA youth director Chris Crumpler, who will accompany the team in Vegas. On paper, Crumpler reckons Bermuda’s current squad is stronger than the one that competed in Vegas last year.“This is the most talent and best chemistry we’ve ever had,” he said. “We have a little bit of everything as it relates to shooting, tough guard play and players who can play above the rim and we’re all excited because we feel this is the best shot we’ve had so far. But it’s all about putting it out there on the floor and making it happen during game time.”BBA’s Under-19s warmed for the upcoming tournament with an impressive showing at last month’s Georgetown District High School Tournament in Ontario, Canada.“We had a great showing in Canada where we could’ve won the tournament had it not been for two fourth quarter collapses which caused us to come home with just one victory,” Crumpler said. “But we earned a lot of respect and the players’ confidence grew so they are looking for a second shot to make a name for themselves, for the team and for Bermuda.“This is the most prepared we’ve ever been so the players have great anticipation and everybody is geared up and ready to go.”Crumpler praised Bermuda Under 19 coach Tim Trott for his continued service to the sport.“Coach Trott has been doing a great job,” he said. “His dedication and commitment has allowed all of this to take place.“He’s spent a lot of time in the basketball fraternity and nobody gets paid as coaches. So it takes a person who really loves the game and really loves the development of the sport and he has definitely been that for us.”Also accompanying the local team to Vegas are head coach Trott and assistant coach Kent Tacklyn.BBA Under-19s: Caleb Ball, Salih Burns, Kieron Dill (co-captain), Dion Easton, Donavan Livingston, Joshua Liyanage (co -captain), Kariim O'Connor, Aaron Perinchief, Jah-Nhai Perinchief, Steven Rance, Quinn Simmons and Tristan White.
