Kitchen investment can boost morale

A well-stocked workplace kitchen can boost office morale and productivity, according to a recent survey from Staples Inc.The survey, from Staples Advantage, the business-to-business division of the office supply giant, suggests that executives who don’t do a good job of stocking up the office fridge do so at their peril. When cubicle drones find bare cupboards, they’re inclined to leave the office in search of snacks, and their absences cut into productivity, Staples Advantage said in a press release.According to the survey, 85 million workers may be routinely leaving the office to get coffee, and such extracurricular excursions can each translate into an estimated 20 to 40 minutes of productivity down-time.“Making small investments in the company kitchen can lead to significant benefits in any workplace,” Lisa Hamblet, vice president for the facility solutions and services business of Staples Advantage, said in a statement.“Our recent survey found that 72 percent viewed the office kitchen as more than just a place to get coffee. To them, it represents a place for impromptu meetings, as well as a space to help keep energy levels high.“This provides an opportunity for employers to create a workplace kitchen that boosts their workforce’s productivity and camaraderie.”
