THE JOB with Susan Simons

Age: 28Role: Graphic Designer, emedia BermudaWhat is your job? I am a graphic designer at emedia. I work with the emedia team to concept all visual material for our client’s marketing and branding endeavors. I then bring them to life using whatever media we deem the most effective. The majority of my work comes down to print and online advertising materials, but I also deal with a lot of signage, stationary, animation and promotional items for our clients as well. What is your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is seeing my ideas as a finished product either printed or on the web. It’s really worthwhile when you can touch and feel the work you have produced, when it was once just a mere thought. It brings a huge sense of pride in your work and your company. It’s like seeing your name in lights! What is your least favourite part of the job? I think most designers would agree with my least favourite aspect of this job. That would be not having as much free range of creativity as I would like when it comes to executing a design project. As a designer this is probably the most frustrating thing. You want to create work that satisfies your client’s needs, but you also want to set yourself apart as a designer and as a design company by adding your own unique ‘flavour’ to a project. You have to strike a good balance between how you believe a project to look and feel and what the client is looking for. Rectifying that ‘gap’ is a difficult but important part of a designer’s job. What is your most interesting experience at work? Oh! So far it would have to be Despereaux. That’s the name of the office mouse. He certainly gave us a run for our money. What would you be doing otherwise? Oh for sure I’d be on a beach somewhere soaking up the sun and enjoying the sea breeze. All I need is a beach or a boat! Other than that I enjoy spending time with my son Roman, who even at such a young age, never ceases to amaze me.
