The Job with Tony Thompson

Tony Thompson

Age: 29Role: Fashion buyer, Gibbons CompanyWhat is your job? I travel overseas to fashion design houses and select clothing and accessories for several of the ladies fashion departments, namely, dress, contemporary, junior’s and accessories. Sometimes it’s a little weird, but I know what I like to see ladies wear, and I get a lot of advice from the women around me.What is your favourite part? The best part of my job is that I get to travel, and see new places and meet new people. Living on a small Island you need to get away sometimes, and I am lucky that I have a job that affords me that opportunity. What is your least favourite part? Ironically, my least favourite part of the job is also my favourite part of the job, as travelling can take its toll. I am also not the biggest fan of flying, and I don’t like packing. I usually wait until the last minute, and then just throw everything into the suitcase. What is your most interesting experience at work? I used to buy a fashion line called ‘G-Unit’. When I was at their showroom in New York, I was talking to the sales representative. My back was towards the door, and someone walked into the room. She said that she wanted to introduce me to the president of the company. I thought ‘Great, now I have to sound smart for the president!’. When I turned around to greet him I realised that I was meeting the well known Rapper, ‘50 Cent’! Needless to say, I didn’t sound smart at all during that conversation. What would you be doing otherwise? Funny enough, I would be a tennis instructor, which is a total 180 from what I do now. Anyone that knows me wouldn’t be surprised though. I will probably do that when I retire. I’ve also always wanted to be a screen writer, and could have just as easily taken that path in college.
