Perozzi, Nelson perplexed by draw

Teresa Perozzi and Tori Nelson slugged their way to another draw that left both boxers perplexed following Saturday night’s rematch for the vacant WBC world middleweight championship at Berkeley Institute Gym.As was the case after last October’s first encounter, both fighters were convinced they had done enough in the ring to lift the title after all was said and done. But the judges felt otherwise, declaring the ten round bout as a draw, much to the astonishment and dismay of both fighters who it gave their all and a sell out crowd that deserved more.Judges Jack Woodburn (Canada) scored it 97-94 to Nelson, Julie Lederman (USA) saw it even at 95-95 while William Boodhoo scored the bout 96-95 in Perozzi’s favour. After the dust had settled, as one might have expected, both fighters expressed bitter disappointment over the decision.Perozzi (9-4-3) said: “I really thought I’d won, especially the last three rounds. I feel I did enough to win.“It hurts because I’ve done this for so many years without a trainer and now I’ve done this twice with the best training of my life with a guy (Troy Darrell) that deserves this more than anybody. I don’t even really know what to say, I’m just disappointed.”When asked about the punch that sent her to the canvass, Perozzi said: “I don’t even know what knocked me down. If I didn’t (knock her down) who knows where this decision might’ve gone. I can’t even understand this one.”And neither could Nelson (6-0-3) who also figured she’d done enough to reclaim the WBC world middleweight belt.“This is getting ridiculous and people just don’t understand how much we put into it being mothers,” she said. “We got to take the time from being a mother to train so hard to come here and get a draw twice. My kids don’t deserve that so I can’t keep taking from my kids doing this and then coming here for this. No, I fight too hard. It’s really frustrating.“Last time we fought I went in aggressive and I brawled her. This fight I boxed her because they (judges) didn’t give it to me when I brawled her so this time I figured if I boxed her I could get it so I don’t know what they want.“When I knocked her down I was like ‘okay, that’s good’. But then when I came back she knocked me down too and I was like ‘okay, I have to get this back’ and I felt that I got it back. I wasn’t tired nowhere in the fight, she was bleeding but I don’t know. Maybe I have to be a Bermudian citizen to fight another Bermudian in order to get the win here.”Both fighters dished out and withstood some heavy punishment throughout this electrifying bout that at times had the crowd on its feet. The fight came alive in the third round when Nelson’s vicious left hook landed flush on the chin of Perozzi who went crashing to the canvass in a heap. Perozzi managed to get back on her feet to beat the count, but was clearly dazed as she stood frozen in the center of the ring. But whatever momentum Nelson gained was quickly lost as Perozzi dusted herself off and responded in the best possible way with a ferocious left to the head that floored her American rival.Things began to get messy in the sixth round when the orthodox Nelson bloodied Perozzi’s nose and threatened to run away with the fight. But the resilient Perozzi came back strongly in the closing rounds, sending Nelson flying into the ropes with a flurry of combination punches at the end of the eighth round as the home crowd began to sense victory. Both fighters continued to swap blows at will until they could barely raise their arms for the remainder of a thrilling bout that had all that one could ask for except a result.
