An aggressive Nikki Bascome came out on top in his rematch against Alvin Lagumbay of Philippines at Dockyard on Saturday.

Bascome won the eight-round welterweight fight by unanimous decision and extended his professional record to 12 wins and one defeat with the judges’ scorecards reading 78-74, 79-73 and 80-72.

The Bermudian fighter was forced to dig deep after taking a huge left to the jaw in the first round and admitted that his opponent proved far tougher second time around.

“He was definitely more dangerous than the last time,” Bascome said.

“He is definitely stronger and you could see he had improved. He wasn't too one-dimensional this time, he was coming forward, passionate and putting his shots together, so I had to be very cautious and use my timing.

“We knew that's his favourite punch to throw, the left, so we worked on defence, trying to avoid it, being cautious about it and countering it, so that was part of the game plan.”

“I knew that he wanted to get some back from the first fight so I couldn't just expect to cruise my way to a victory. I had to show him that I wanted it so I had to show a little bit more.

Both fighters had plenty of supporters at the venue with Bascome cheered on by footballer Nahki Wells and Lagumbay backed by a strong contingent of fans, but Bascome is now used to blocking out the wall of noise and focusing on the task at hand.

“I tried to block out the fans, even my own fans,” he said.

“They do play a big part but in most fights I focus, I knew they cant fight for me, so that's why I stay focused on what I am doing and listen to my corner,.’

Despite a tentative opening round, Bascome was on the front foot for most of the fight, with the sixth round proving the most entertainment for the fans before the two fighters began to display signs of tiredness in the final two rounds.

After the fight, Bascome revealed that he is now engaged and will be getting married later this year.

“I am getting married in November and for the meantime that's going to be my focus,” he said.

“I will still be training and if a fight comes up I can run it by my fiancee, but for the most part I will be focusing on my wedding,’’ announced Bascome.

Bascome attentions have also turned to training the next generation of fighters and the Bermudian was keen that his fight against Lagumbay was watched by some of his pupils.

“I got a few of my fighters that I train to come tonight,” Bascome said. “They supported me and it was a beautiful feeling.”
