Take our Budget advice - UBP
United Bermuda Party leader Kim Swan yesterday urged Premier Paula Cox to take his party's advice as she prepares to deliver her first Budget as leader of the Country.Mr Swan said the Island would be in much better shape if Government had heeded the UBP's financial suggestions over the past few years. And he hopes Ms Cox will unveil plans mirroring some of Shadow Finance Minister Bob Richards' suggestions designed to increase revenue by making international business more competitive.“Our team will work diligently to reinforce the need to work toward the basic objectives Mr Richards has laid down in recent months,” said Mr Swan in a statement.“Virtually everyone in the Country is aware that Bermuda is in the grip of its most serious economic challenge in many generations, and that the Government's spendthrift ways, enabled since 2004 by the Premier/Finance Minister, have made the situation much worse.“The Budget tomorrow must lay down a clear plan to get the Island back on track; to restore income, grow jobs, impose spending discipline and restore confidence not just in the Government but in Bermuda.”Ms Cox has said next to nothing publicly, with senior ministerial figures yesterday still unaware exactly what cuts are in store as she tries to make $150 million savings in her first fiscal year as Premier.Possible tax increases have been mentioned for alcohol, cigarettes and large vehicles, while economist Craig Simmons has predicted land tax, vehicular licence, immigration and foreign currency purchase fees could all be hiked.
