Drug importer's sentencing set for January 20
A convicted drug importer was arrested for alleged burglary on his way to Supreme Court yesterday.Lincoln Christopher, 40, was meant to appear before the Chief Justice at 10am so his sentence date could be set.He pleaded guilty in November to importing $40,000-worth of cannabis to Bermuda, and was bailed pending the completion of a substance abuse report. The drugs were found in his bag when he came to Bermuda on February 11 on the British Airways' flight from London. He'd previously been staying in Jamaica. There was no sign of Christopher when court began yesterday, and defence lawyer Craig Attridge explained he'd been arrested on his way from his home in St George's.Mr Attridge said the arrest was in connection with a different matter, which he did not specify, and Christopher had yet to be charged with anything.“He's at Hamilton Police Station which is why he's not before you already,” he told Chief Justice Richard Ground.“He was making every effort but the Police interceded.”Police eventually brought Christopher to court at 10.45am when his sentence date was fixed for January 20.Mr Attridge successfully argued that he should be bailed again over the drugs matter because he had not yet been charged with any further offence.Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney did not object, telling the court: “I am not in a position to advise further.”Mr. Justice Ground said it would be up to the Police to decide whether to bail him over the burglary investigation, or the Magistrates' Court if he's charged there.Christopher, who has a string of previous convictions dating back to 1985 including burglary and heroin importation was then taken back to Hamilton Police Station for further questioning.Asked about the issue, a Police spokesman said: “A 40-year-old man was arrested at 9.50am on Barker's Hill, North Shore, as a result of a burglary investigation.”Christopher remained in custody yesterday afternoon.
