Social inquiry report ordered on thief

A social inquiry report was ordered for 40-year-old woman who solicited cash, pretending it was earmarked for a charity.Fredericka Fox, of Pembroke, admitted in Magistrates’ Court to dishonestly obtaining money. The Angle Street resident said she was on heroin at the time.Crown counsel Robert Welling told the court that on February 5, 2010, Fox was standing with a white bucket in the car park of the Peoples’ Pharmacy on Church Street in Hamilton, soliciting donations for the Adult Education Centre.At about 2.45pm a man who had given her $5 called the centre to verify the fundraising effort and then called the police.When confronted, Fox told them: “I was collecting the money for my adult education.”She had received $36.60. Fox admitted making up the story and said she was a recovering drug addict.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered social inquiry and substance abuse reports. Fox was released on $1,000 bail and her trial adjourned until February 28.
