Fisherman admits cannabis offence

A fisherman will be sentenced in March after admitting possession of cannabis with a street value of $200.Lovell Smith, 32, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates’ Court.Prosecutor Takiyah Burgess said police officers executed a search warrant at his home on Olive Lane, Sandys, on January 20, 2010.She said Smith told the officers he had some cannabis for his own use in the pocket of his jeans. Police found a plastic twist containing plant material, which was later found to be 4.11 grams of cannabis.Rick Woolridge, mitigating, said Smith was a professional fisherman with no previous convictions who “self-medicated” with the controlled drug during a “low period in his life”.He said his client was no longer using cannabis and asked for a conditional discharge for the “minor infraction”.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo adjourned sentencing until March 18 and extended Smith’s bail.
