Man, 58, admits forging cheque

A social inquiry report has been ordered for a 58-year-old man who admitted forging a cheque.Dennis Landy, who gave his place of residence as the Harbour Lights Rehab Centre, said he altered the amount on a cheque because he was behind on his mortgage repayments.Crown counsel Kirsty-Ann Keillor told Magistrates’ Court that Landy was hired on October 17 to repair equipment at the Somerset Laundromat. He was given a cheque for $200 for the job.The court heard that on October 21, part-owner of the business Alan Pearman checked his online account and noticed a transaction for the amount of $2,200.He reported it to police, and Landy was arrested on December 30. Landy admitted to police that he altered the cheque but said he had needed the money for his mortgage.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned his trial until March 22 and released him on $2,000 bail.
