Accused killer Ronniko Burchall yesterday accused his half-brother Leroy Symons of attempting to frame him for the murder of Shane Minors.“Ray Charles could see it,” the 22-year-old told a Supreme Court jury.“He is trying to frame me. Can’t you see?”Both Mr Burchall and Mr Symons, 21, are charged with the murder of Mr Minors. The 30-year-old was fatally shot outside his Middle Terrace, Pembroke apartment around 1.12am on December 17, 2009.Mr Burchall faces a further charge of using a firearm to commit murder. Both men have pleaded not guilty to the charges.Earlier yesterday, Crown counsel Robert Welling accused Mr Burchall of attempting to mislead the jury. The lawyer presented a letter to the court from Mr Burchall’s former employer which stated he was fired because he didn’t register for required courses at Bermuda College.Mr Burchall told the court on Wednesday that he lost his mechanic job at the bus garage because of the murder charges he is now facing. He also said he spent time in the Middle Terrace neighbourhood on the night of the murder before taking a taxi to his girlfriend’s house and then his aunt’s, where he fell asleep.A statement by Detective Inspector Michael Redfern was read to the court. In it he described speaking with Mr Burchall’s girlfriend almost a year after the shooting. She told the officer that Mr Burchall was at her house on the night of the murder and left by taxi shortly after midnight.Under cross-examination yesterday, Mr Burchall struggled to recall who he was with in Middle Terrace until he was prompted by his half-brother’s lawyer.“You came in [on Wednesday] to try to paint a very misleading picture of yourself,” Mr Welling said.“You are facing murder allegations. You are not guilty of this. You know you are not guilty because you were not there at the time and all these people should be able to help you.“You would have thought, ‘Who was I with? They could help me’. So why is it you have to pause and think about who can do that?”Mr Burchall denied that he paused, and responded: “They said they don’t want nothing to do with this.”Mr Welling asked Mr Burchall if he had tried to get phone or taxi records to help support his version of events on that night he said he hadn’t.Mr Welling then questioned Mr Burchall on the contents of secretly recorded conversations between the two accused. He said after he had learned Mr Symons had spoken to police, Mr Burchall used the words “snitch,” “squeal” and “prick”.Mr Welling said Mr Burchall only called his half-brother a liar after he denied talking to police.Mr Burchall responded: “You can never take anything he says serious. I knew he was lying.“When you hear ignorance, you sometimes put a blind eye to it.”The defendant was also shown several pictures, one of which depicted him alongside reported Parkside members Prince Edness and Sanchay Grant. He denied being involved in any gang.“We don’t have gangs in Bermuda, just a group of young boys,” he said. “I’m not a gang member. I’m a pony racer and a football player. Gangs are in the States.”The prosecution has alleged that Mr Minors was killed as part of a series of tit-for-tat shootings between the Parkside and 42 gangs.Mr Minors was not believed to be involved in gang activity; gang expert Andrew Rollin said that his brother Shaki was a member of the 42 gang. The trial is expected to continue this morning.
