Suspects face gun and robbery charges at arraignments session
Two teenagers charged with a string of armed robberies and several alleged gunmen appeared in Supreme Court in a busy arraignments session yesterday.Jaron Roberts, 19, and Kamrone Whiting, 18, appeared in connection with allegedly using an imitation firearm in six roadside robberies and attempted robberies on March 14 and 15.They pleaded not guilty to a total of 14 charges relating to offences in the parishes of Pembroke, Devonshire and Paget.The men will remain in custody until their trial starts on November 2.Both are charged with using an imitation firearm to rob Luz Lorhan in St John’s Road, Pembroke, of a bike box. They are also accused of attempting to rob Joseph Daos in Montpelier Road, Devonshire, on March 14.They are further charged with robbing Jesse Prady of a Nolan crash helmet and attempting to rob Jackson Mark Kernion on South Road, Warwick, also on March 14. On the same day they are charged with the alleged robbery of Andrea Cioanu and Agnes Dalma on Middle Road, Paget.They also face the charge of robbing Jace Cowan of $72 dollars and 30 Canadian dollars on Harbour Road, Paget, on March 15.The teenagers face an additional charge of intimidation and Mr Roberts is accused of handling stolen goods on March 14.Jahmel Blakeney, 29, and Sanchey Grant, 20, appeared in connection with the shooting of Shaki Minors and his girlfriend Renee Kuchler as they left Southside Cinema in November 2009.The two defendants pleaded not guilty to two charges of attempted murder and two charges of possessing of a firearm. The men were remanded in custody until their trial on October 10.Another two men Anwar Muhammad, 22, and Shawn Williams, 20, appeared in connection with the attempted murder of Shantoine Princeton Burrows on August 23, 2010.Both men, who are in custody, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence. Their trial is scheduled for November 28, but an earlier date is being considered.Kyril Burrows, 47, Delcina Bean-Burrows, 48, Greatfield Carmichael, 61, and Calvin Waldron, 43, face a total of 37 charges deceptively obtaining money transfers, cheating and money laundering.The four each pleaded not guilty to the charges read out to them, which relate to the alleged conspiracy to defraud the Bermuda Government between January 1, 2005 and June 30, 2008.The four defendants remain on bail and will face trial on January 9 next year, which will be the first trial of 2012.In another matter, a 19-year-old appeared in connection with a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 14 between April 1 and May 8 this year.The same man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also charged with intimidating a witness and attempting to pervert the course of justice.He will remain on bail until his trial, which is scheduled for September 19.Royston Place, 45, denied a charge of wounding Eric Burch with intent on June 29, 2010. His bail was extended until his trial on November 14.In a separate case, it was found that Cedric Oates, 40, had breached his bail and Chief Justice Richard Ground named him a “fugitive of justice.”Mr Oates is facing allegations he swindled a woman out of $345,000. He is said to have used a statement he knew to be false, misleading or deceptive to get Dianne Laird to invest the monies.The court heard how Mr Oates had not returned to Bermuda after being given permission to travel overseas for medical reasons. He did not turn up for his trial last month.Justice Ground said the e-mailed doctor’s letter “isn’t very convincing.” He said he was suspicious of Mr Oates behaviour and wanted to see a proper notified doctor’s certificate to confirm the identity of the medic.A previous hearing heard how Mr Oates is a US citizen married to a Bermudian, and he’d been working in Bermuda as a school counsellor.Mr Oates is scheduled to appear at the next arraignments session on August 1 for the matter to be mentioned.A man and woman faced charges of handling a Rexio RJ Serie .38 SPL revolver gun on or about December 12, 2010.Kofi Dill, 31, and Thayja Simons, 22, are additionally charged with handling ammunition in the form of a .38 calibre bullet.Mr Dill and Ms Simons have previously denied both sets of charges and were remanded into custody until their trial begins on August 22.Meanwhile, Michelle Latoya Gibbons, 28, appeared in connection with a charge of conspiracy to import $1.1 million of cannabis.Ms Gibbons, who pleaded guilty at an earlier Supreme Court hearing, is scheduled to appear at the next arraignments session on August 1 for the matter to be mentioned.
