Chief Justice to ‘fugitive’: Come back or be extradited

School guidance counsellor Cedric Oates is alleged to have swindled a woman out of $345,000. A judge yesterday accused him of ?malingering? by seeking medical treatment overeseas and failing to come back to Bermuda to stand trial.

A judge suspects a man facing fraud charges who has been seeking lengthy medical treatment overseas is “malingering”.Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves yesterday ordered Cedric Oates to return to Bermuda by November 21 to stand trial, or face the possibility of extradition proceedings. Mr Oates, 40, is a school guidance counsellor accused of swindling a woman out of $345,000.Defence lawyer Rick Woolridge said yesterday that Mr Oates continues to be treated for a cardiac condition in Atlanta, Georgia, and handed the judge a notarised letter to that effect. Noting Oates’ absence since April, the judge said “it is not unreasonable, I think in these circumstances, to begin to draw the conclusion that we may have on our hands a fugitive.”Mr Justice Greaves concluded “it appears to this court” that Mr Oates is “malingering” and if he does not return, “the Crown must seriously begin to consider extradition proceedings.”
