Man convicted of saucepan attack

A man has been convicted of hitting his girlfriend’s son in the head with a saucepan.Jerry Troy Eastmond Williams, 47, of Pembroke, attacked William Smith on May 17.Prosecutor Nicole Smith told Supreme Court during Williams’ trial that Smith, 18, was visiting his mother, brother and sister at their home in Derwent Lane, Pembroke, on the night in question. His younger brother said something to offend him, so he smacked him in the mouth. When Williams heard what happened, he flew into a rage and threatened to kill everyone in the house. He grabbed Smith, slammed him against a wall, grabbed a large metal cooking pot from on top of the stove and smashed it down on the teenager’s head.Smith suffered a head wound that bled profusely.Williams, who had been the victim’s mother’s boyfriend for many years, admitted hitting the teenager with the pot. However, he said it happened after he tried to remove Smith from the house and Smith tried to strangle him by putting him in a headlock.Williams pleaded not guilty to unlawful wounding and went on trial at Supreme Court this week, but was convicted by the jury after less than an hour on Friday. He was remanded into custody and will be sentenced at a later date.Meanwhile, Smith is facing a Supreme Court sentence of his own soon. He admitted, earlier this year, to attacking a vulnerable woman in her own home when he was just 16 years old.The 55-year-old woman, who is mentally challenged, was bound with duct tape and beaten by Smith, who tricked his way into her home by pretending he was a medical student. The teenager tied the victim’s hands to her ankles, pulled a cloth over her eyes and punched her in the face as she lay on the couch. He is due to be sentenced once psychiatric reports have been completed.
