Visiting US missionary charged with gun possession

A 72-year-old US missionary was remanded in custody after he was charged with possession of a pistol, ammunition and a baton.Bail was denied to Egbert Haywood of North Carolina yesterday in Magistrates’ Court.Mr Haywood was not required to enter a plea as his case is indictable and must be heard before the Supreme Court.He was charged with carrying a prohibited weapon in Bermuda, namely a .32 calibre pistol, and four rounds of ammunition on or about November 22.Mr Haywood was further charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely an expandable baton, at LF Wade International Airport on November 22.He was represented by lawyer Saul Froomkin, QC, who described Mr Haywood as a missionary with the Southern Baptist Church in North Carolina.Mr Haywood’s application for bail was refused, although another application may be heard before the Supreme Court.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded the defendant into custody until December 2.
