A man who is serving a 30-year jail sentence for shooting a pregnant woman and her boyfriend headbutted a prison officer in Westgate.Sanchey Grant, 21, admitted yesterday to assaulting the 30-year-old officer, James Codrington.Grant was convicted after a trial last year of shooting gang member Shaki Minors and his pregnant girlfriend Renee Kuchler outside Southside Cinema in St David’s.Both victims were seriously injured in the attack on November 13, 2009.Grant, and his accomplice in the crime, Jahmel Blakeney, were said to have links to the Parkside gang during their trial. They were jailed for 30 years each in December 2011 after being convicted by a jury.Just three months later, on March 23 this year, Grant attacked prison guard Mr Codrington.Yesterday, at Magistrates’ Court prosecutor Carrington Mahoney explained that at 10.45pm on March 23, Mr Codrington approached Grant, who was in maximum security, to conduct a strip-search.Grant refused the strip-search and was handcuffed as a result. The defendant then headbutted Mr Codrington. The defendant was subsequently arrested over the attack.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner stressed that the offence was serious because it was committed while the defendant was already serving time, and against a prison officer. He sentenced Grant to six months for the assault, to run concurrently to his 30-year sentence.
