New Supreme Court judge is sworn in

Governor George Fergusson officially swore in Stephen Hellman as a Puisne Judge to the Island's Supreme Court at Government House yesterday.

Supreme Court judge Stephen Hellmen was yesterday sworn in at a ceremony at Government House.Capping a lengthy career in island jurisdictions as well as the UK Bar, the barrister and commercial litigator pledged allegiance alongside Governor George Fergusson.“I'm very much looking forward to serving the community and serving the law as a judge,” Justice Hellman told The Royal Gazette. “I have reached the point in my legal career where this was a logical next step, and I am fortunate to have been appointed in such a highly regarded jurisdiction as Bermuda. I will do my best to meet the high standards set by the bench.”The ceremony, which brought the Island's complement of Justices to five, was attended by Justice Minister Kim Wilson, Chief Justice Ian Kawaley, Justice Norma Wade Miller, Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Carrington Mahoney, Bermuda Bar Association president Delroy Duncan and Registrar of the Court Charlene Scott.Appointed to the five-year position in July, the new Puisne Judge looked back on a long career in offshore jurisdictions.Justice Hellman was first called to the Bar in 1988. He practised in law until 2005 when he moved to Cayman and spent the next five years as a commercial litigator. He also spent two-and-a-half years as a litigator in Guernsey.His swearing-in was Bermuda's first since the March 2005 appointments of Geoffrey Bell and Carlisle Greaves.Alongside Justices Kawaley and Wade Miller, Justice Hellman will serve with Justice Greaves and Justice Charles-Etta Simmons.Useful website: www.judiciary.gov.bm.
