A millionaire British entrepreneur is accused of raping a Bermudian woman on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.Gregory Charles Cox — founder of the Quintessential Finance Group — is alleged to have met the victim at a bar just before attacking her on January 22.He is now facing a charge of having sexual intercourse without consent. He denies the allegation, and claims the sex was consensual.According to a report in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, Mr Cox, 31, failed in a bid on Wednesday to keep his identity secret. He told Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney that his privileged background meant he would be subject to “undue embarrassment”.In Australia — unlike Bermuda — the press is generally permitted to name those accused of rape before they are convicted. The Daily Telegraph reported that the defendant’s lawyer, Senior Counsel Graham Turnbull, told the court Mr Cox went to an “elite” school, comes from a well-known family, and is renowned for his exploits on the football field. He said this had exposed him to “an undue level of interest” since the allegations were made public.Cox, who is living in Bronte, Sydney, after having his passport confiscated, attended the exclusive Millfield boarding school in the English countryside. On Wednesday, he faced a hearing to decide if the alleged victim — who cannot be identified — could be forced to give evidence at his committal hearing, when a Magistrate will rule if he stands trial.Mr Turnbull tried to have Mr Cox’s identity suppressed in the media but Magistrate Glenn Walsh threw out the application, saying he had been presented with “nothing out of the ordinary” to justify the move. The court also heard how two people took the woman to a police station within minutes of the incident. She was later found to be suffering a head injury, although this could have been up to two days old.According to the Daily Telegraph, prosecutor Claire Moore said several aspects of the woman’s version of events were backed up by corroborating evidence.Mr Turnbull said his client had been “open” with the police.Mr Cox is the CEO and founder of the UK-based Quintessential Finance Group, which comprises a portfolio of leading digital and technology-focused consumer finance brands and businesses. The court case continues next month.
