College student spat on, cursed at Police
A Bermuda College student who assaulted police officers and swore at them was yesterday released on $2,000 bail.Jasmine Hendrickson of Astwood Close, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to the offences in Magistrates’ Court.Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said officers on duty saw the 22-year-old with a beer bottle in her hand outside Chewstick on Court Street at 10.50pm on September 22.After they warned her about drinking on a public street, Hendrickson spat on the ground and asked the officers where they were from.The officers, both Bermudian, replied that it did not matter.Hendrickson replied: “It does matter, b***ch. F**k you, b***itch.”She continued with similar comments on the way to Hamilton Police Station. She also attempted to headbutt the officers, but instead spat on them.The web development and graphic design student told Magistrates’ Court yesterday: “I don’t recall all that information. All I know is I felt threatened.”She said she had “endured undue roughness” by the police and was drunk at the time of the incident.“I kind of blacked out,” she said.Warned by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that she was on the verge of being imprisoned for ten days, Hendrickson broke down in tears.“I’m a dedicated student and ten days [in prison] would really make me fail,” she said, adding that she learned her lesson this weekend while in custody.“I thought I could go out and have a little fun without going overboard but I did and I’m sorry,” Hendrickson stated.Her mother, Karmeta Hendrickson, described her daughter as a good student with a 3.8 grade point average.She said she was due to graduate in May and then hoped to participate in a global college programme, Semester at Sea.Mr Warner ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned the matter to November 8.Hendrickson was released on $2,000 bail plus one surety with the condition that she maintain a 9pm to 6am curfew.
