Teenager convicted of handling firearm

A Pembroke teenager whose DNA was found on the trigger of a gun was yesterday jailed for handling the firearm.Dameko Dublin, 19, had denied having any contact with the Smith & Wesson revolver seized by officers on November 5, 2011.He was initially charged alongside 20-year-old Darrion Simons with handling the firearm and ammunition.Simons pleaded guilty to the offence just before the trial started on Monday, and was jailed for ten years.The Supreme Court heard that police saw Simons and another man near a car parked to the immediate west of the Clay House Inn around 2.30am.The officers approached the area and Simons stashed an item near the car’s rear wheel.The pair then rode off on a motorcycle but were stopped a short distance away.A search found a black sock on the parked car’s tyre. A revolver loaded with five rounds of .38 calibre ammunition was inside.Dublin’s DNA was found on the sock and the weapon’s trigger. He was arrested in January 2012 at Somerset Cricket Club.He told the jury during the trial that he frequently spent time at Simons’ home, and had on occasion borrowed his socks.CCTV footage showed Dublin at Gravity nightclub and walking in the direction of the Clay House Inn, on the morning the weapon was discovered.The seven-woman, five-man jury yesterday found him guilty of handling the firearm.Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves jailed him until the April arraignments session when a sentencing date will be set.
