Pregnant drug mule jailed

A pregnant Jamaican national was jailed for six months after admitting she attempted to import nearly $130,000 of cocaine.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said it was his intent to have Alphia Anita Rollins deported, rather than serve her full sentence here. The 29-year-old, who is eight months pregnant, was arrested at LF Wade International Airport on June 5 shortly after arriving on an Air Canada flight from Toronto.Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said Rollins was sent for a secondary inspection after queueing in the nothing to declare line.Customs officers searched her luggage and found a false bottom within her carry-on, containing more than 500 grams of cocaine.Mr Warner emphasised his desire to have the case resolved ahead of her due date.“Pregnancy is a strong mitigating factor here. There is an indignity for any child born in prison, and this Government will not want to support two people in jail.”
