Bermudian charged in UK death crash

A Bermudian driver has been charged with causing the death of a young motorcyclist in England by driving carelessly.

Malcolm Griffiths was officially charged with the offence of causing death by careless driving on Friday by police in the UK.

Mr Griffiths of Landmark Drive, Southampton had to return to England last week to find out if he was to be charged in connection with the crash.

After being charged with causing death by careless driving he was released on police bail and told to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court in West Sussex on March 24.

The 69-year-old was arrested after the fatal road traffic accident on August 24 on the A29, close to the village of Bury.

He was originally bailed until October 3, but was rebailed by police until last month while officers continued their investigations into the accident.

Mr Griffiths was behind the wheel when his car collided with motorcyclist William Ruewell on the A29 in West Sussex.

Mr Ruewell, 20, sustained significant injuries as a result of the crash and died.

Mr Griffiths passenger, a 64-year-old Bermudian woman, suffered whiplash and a broken collarbone in the accident.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Malcolm Griffiths, 69, of Landmark Drive, Southampton, Bermuda, has been charged with causing death by careless driving. He was released on bail to appear at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 24 March.”
