A 54-year-old man clocked driving nearly three times the speed limit has been ordered off the roads for 18 months after pleading guilty to impaired driving.

Peter Araujo, from Smith’s, was pulled over by police officers on North Shore Road near Terceira’s gas station at about 1.45am on December 3, 2017.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Araujo was captured on laser driving at 102km/h.

Police said his eyes were glazed and his face was red when he was stopped. He was ordered to provide samples of breath for analysis. The lower of the two showed he had 132 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.

Araujo apologised in court.

He said: “This is not something I would do normally. This was fuelled by anger. It was a stupid thing to do.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo responded: “What a way to commit your first offence. You are lucky to be here.”

Araujo, a construction worker, was disqualified from operating all vehicles for 18 months, with the exception of machinery operated off public roads.

He was fined $1,200 for impaired driving and $500 for speeding.
