Man sentenced to two years in jail for assault and robbery

A drug addict who beat and stole from a man has been jailed for two years.

David Hill, 36, from Sandys, pleaded guilty to assault and robbery when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in December. He was remanded in custody and appeared in court yesterday for sentencing.

The court heard that in August 2021, Hill and another man not before the court had approached Shawn Trott, whom Hill had reportedly known for ten years, at a Sandys bus shelter and asked him for money.

As Mr Trott reached into his pocket, he was thrown to the ground and punched and kicked. Mr Trott’s wallet, which contained $300 in cash, was stolen during the altercation.

Hill told magistrate Craig Attridge that he first approached Mr Trott to ask him to leave the bus shelter, not to assault or steal from him and that he took the wallet to fund his heroin addiction.

He added that he was the lone assailant during the incident, despite what was read in court.

Mr Attridge suggested that Hill participate in the Right Living House treatment programme, offered by the Department of Corrections, while serving his sentence.
