Woman attacked by pitbull-type dog as she took out trash, court told

A “pitbull-type dog” attacked a woman as she was taking out her trash, a court heard this week.

Macray Bulford, 50, from Sandys, denied owning the dog involved in the incident, as well as not having a valid licence for the animal.

During the trial, animal control officer Jeffrey Benevides told magistrate Tyrone Chin that he received a report of a dog attack from Denise Steede in August 2018.

Ms Steede told Mr Benevides that she was attacked by a dog while she was taking out the garbage near her Sandys home, the court heard.

Mr Benevides told the court that he was informed about an aggressive brown pitbull found at another Sandys location one day after receiving Ms Steede’s statement.

He said he believed that the male dog found on the property, which was taken to the government kennel, matched Ms Steede’s description of the one that attacked her.

The officer told the court that he talked to Mr Bulford, Ms Steede’s former neighbour, about the attack.

While speaking to Mr Benevides, Mr Bulford allegedly admitted owning the dog and agreed to surrender him, the court heard.

When questioned by his lawyer, Bruce Swan, Mr Bulford said that he tried to restrain the dog after hearing Ms Steede scream during the attack and eventually got him off her.

However, he insisted that he did not own the dog, had not seen him before the day of the incident and did not take him to the property where he was later found.

Mr Chin adjourned the case to August 16 and extended Mr Bulford’s bail until that time.
