Man received suspended sentence for having a knife

A man found with a knife in Dockyard was given a suspended prison sentence in Magistrates’ Court.

Stefan Martin, 27, admitted having the weapon when he appeared in court in January.

The court heard that Martin, from Pembroke, threw the knife, which had a four-inch blade, into bushes while being arrested in August.

Martin apologised for his actions and called the incident an “unfortunate situation” when he reappeared in court for sentencing.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson called the prevalence of similar offences throughout the island “out of control” and sentenced Martin to three months behind bars, suspended for one year.
