Man denies assault and having a machete

A man has denied an assault and threatening behaviour while wielding a machete in public.

Melroy Sutherland, 37, pleaded not guilty yesterday in Magistrates’ Court to assaulting a woman and using threatening behaviour against her.

He also denied wielding a bladed article, namely a machete, without good reason or lawful authority.

The incident was alleged to have happened on Saturday.

Neither the alleged threatening behaviour nor any possible injuries were described in court.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson released Mr Sutherland, from Pembroke, on $8,000 bail.

She ordered him not to contact the alleged victim or go near her residence, and adjourned the case until October 6.
