Man fined, banned from the roads for drink-driving

A man was banned from the roads for 18 months after he admitted a drink-driving charge.

Seymour Ramatar, 44, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to driving while over the legal alcohol limit.

The court heard that police were conducting licence plate checks on Parsons Road, Pembroke, when they stopped Ramatar as he travelled east.

He admitting drinking alcohol earlier that night and took part in a roadside sobriety check, which he failed.

Ramatar was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where officers demanded he give a sample of breath for analysis.

The test showed that Ramatar had 117.7 milligrams of alcohol in every 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.

The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ramatar, from Pembroke, told the court that he went to see a sports game earlier and “had a drink afterwards”.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson heard that Ramatar had a similar conviction in 2018 for refusing to take a breath test.

However, she said that conviction was old enough for him to be treated as a first-time offender again.

Ms Anderson fined Ramatar $1,500 in addition to the road ban and ordered him to pay the fine by the end of the day.
