Trio charged with robbery, assault sent to Supreme Court

Three men accused of robbery and assault will have their case heard in the Supreme Court.

Jelani Simmons, 21, Zion Smith-Codrington and Ajahni Bascome-Lema, both 18, appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The three men were charged with taking a motorcycle without the owner’s consent, assaulting a man with intent to rob and participating in a public fight on March 14.

They were given the option to have their cases heard in either Magistrates’ Court or the Supreme Court and chose the former.

However, senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson said yesterday that the case could not be heard in the lower court.

She referred the case to the higher court’s next arraignment session on May 4 and remanded the three men in custody.
